Factors Influencing Adaptive Marine Governance in a Developing Country Context: a Case Study of Southern Kenya Ecology and Society
Evans, Louisa S.; The School of International Development, University of East Anglia; louisa.evans@jcu.edu.au; Brown, Katrina; The School of International Development, University of East Anglia; k.brown@uea.ac.uk; Allison, Edward H.; The WorldFish Center; e.allison@cgiar.org.
Adaptive governance can be conceptualized as distinct phases of: 1) understanding environmental change; 2) using this understanding to inform decision making; and 3) acting on decisions in a manner that sustains resilience of desirable system states. Using this analytical framework, we explore governance in practice in two case studies in Kenya, that reflect the “messiness” of contemporary coastal governance in many developing country contexts. Findings suggest that adaptive marine governance is unlikely to be a smooth process of learning, knowledge sharing, and responding. There are institutional, sociocultural, and political factors, past and present, that influence each phase of both local and state decision making. New local...

Integrating Citizens in Adaptive Management: A Propositional Analysis Ecology and Society
Shindler, Bruce; Oregon State University; bruce.shindler@orst.edu; Aldred Cheek, Kristin; University of Montana; cheekK@forestry.umt.edu.
Lee has advocated for the use of civic science in the implementation of adaptive management experiments, noting that people and political processes are central features of adaptive approaches to land management. This paper explores the growing relationship between the public and forest management agencies, and uses a propositional analysis to guide methods for integrating citizens into adaptive management situations. Important characteristics are organized and discussed in six thematic areas. Citizen-agency interactions are more effective when (1) they are open and inclusive, (2) they are built on skilled leadership and interactive forums, (3) they include innovative and flexible methods, (4) involvement is early and continuous, (5) efforts result in...

Investigating accessibility in Latin American science museums and centers Anais da ABC (AABC)
ROCHA,JESSICA NORBERTO; MASSARANI,LUISA; ABREU,WILLIAN VIEIRA DE; INACIO,LUIZ GUSTAVO BARCELLOS; MOLENZANI,ALINE OLIVEIRA.
Abstract Science museums are powerful places not only for science communication, informal science teaching, and leisure but also for promoting science and technology in an equitable, diverse, and inclusive mode. The paper presents an overview of accessibility in Latin American science museums and centers, based on a questionnaire comprised of open and closed questions in Portuguese and Spanish. The answers received from directors and other personnel responsible for 109 institutions in twelve countries were analyzed using an accessibility indicator tool. The findings suggest that these institutions generally offer some physical accessibility resources and fewer communicational and attitudinal accessibility resources. Data also show that there is an absence...

Meeting institutional criteria for social resilience: a nested risk system model Ecology and Society
Blair, Berill; University of Alaska Fairbanks; bsblair@alaska.edu; Lovecraft, Amy L.; University of Alaska Fairbanks; allovecraft@alaska.edu; Kofinas, Gary P.; University of Alaska Fairbanks; gpkofinas@alaska.edu.
Communities of Alaska’s North Slope face increased stresses from cumulative effects of industrial development, resource use, and changing cryospheric and socioeconomic conditions. Given these multiple pressures, what avenues exist for citizens and decision makers to exchange knowledge about impacts of oil resource extraction in Alaska, and how do the successes and failures of knowledge exchange affect the resilience of the local social ecological system? We focused our research on the risk management process of Alaska North Slope oil resources, drawing on literature that has grown out of the risk society thesis and concepts of resilience science. We surveyed state and federal initiatives designed to increase local and indigenous stakeholder...

Performance of broiler chickens supplemented with Mexican oregano oil (Lippia berlandieri Schauer) R. Bras. Zootec.
Vázquez,Ramón Silva; Meléndez,Lorenzo Antonio Durán; Estrada,Eduardo Santellano; Rodríguez Muela,Carlos; Villalobos,Guillermo Villalobos; Zamora,Gerardo Méndez; Hume,Michael E..
The objective of this research was to evaluate the inclusion of two qualities of Mexican oregano oil (MOO) in broiler diets on broiler weight, feed intake, feed efficiency, average daily gain, and water intake. The qualities were MOO1 (4% thymol, 60% carvacrol) and MOO2 (40% thymol, 20% carvacrol). Nine treatments were prepared by the combinations of MOO1 + MOO2 (0, 400, and 800 mg kg−1; added per kg of feed) respectively: 0+0, 0+400, 0+800, 400+0, 400+400, 400+800, 800+0, 800+400, and 800+800. Eighteen chicks per treatment were divided in a completely randomized design into nine cages. Broiler weights were altered by the treatments at 21 d, when 400+400 had the highest weight, and on day 39, when the greatest weight was seen in broilers on treatments...

The effect of mango waste meal in the protein:carbohydrate ratio on performance and body composition of pacamã fish (Lophiosilurus alexandri) Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Souza,A.M.; Melo,J.F.B.; Moreira,E.M.S.; Souza,E.M..
We evaluated the inclusion of peeled-mango waste meal as a source of carbohydrate in the protein:carbohydrate ratio (CP:CH) on performance and chemical composition of pacamã (Lophiosilurus alexandri) juveniles. One hundred and fifty fish (11.31±0.96g) were stocked in sixteen 500 L tanks, fed three times daily (10% of live weight), in a system with water recirculation with biofilter. The treatments consisted of four experimental diets with decreasing levels of the ratio between crude protein and carbohydrate (1.40, 0.94, 0.56 and 0.29), with four replications per treatment. At the end of 60 days, we evaluated animal performance (final average weight gain, specific growth rate, total apparent feed intake, carcass yield, survival) and physicochemical...

The REDD+ policy arena in Vietnam: participation of policy actors Ecology and Society
Pham, Thuy T.; Center for International Forestry Research; t.pham@cgiar.org; Di Gregorio, Monica; University of Leeds; m.digregorio@leeds.ac.uk; Carmenta, Rachel; Center for International Forestry Research; R.Carmenta@cgiar.org; Brockhaus, Maria; Center for International Forestry Research; M.BROCKHAUS@CGIAR.ORG; Le, Dung N.; Center for International Forestry Research; dzunglengoc@gmail.com.
Reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation (REDD+) has gained increasing global attention because of its potential to reduce carbon emissions and improve forest governance. Reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation requires successful inclusive decision making and accountability. However, there have been limited empirical studies that examine the effectiveness of the current participatory mechanism used in REDD+. Our research analyzes the participation of policy actors in the development of the REDD+ instrument in Vietnam. We are interested in how the political context and the different interests of actors influence the degree of participation in national REDD+ policy decision making. We explored participation through the analysis of...
